BMW X4 M40i (G02) Tuning Guide 2026 — Body Kits, Wheels & B58 Performance

The BMW X4 M40i (G02) sits in a peculiar niche: it is not the full-fat X4 M Competition (F98) with its S58 motor and track-biased chassis, yet it comfortably outpaces anything wearing an M Performance badge has a right to. Under the sculpted bonnet lives the B58 — the 3.0-litre single-turbo inline-six that BMW also supplies to Toyota for the Supra A90, drops into the Z4 M40i, the M340i and the 540i. It is, by broad consensus, one of the finest production engines of the decade. This guide covers every meaningful upgrade available for the G02 M40i: body kits, forged wheels, Stage 1 to Stage 3 power builds, exhaust hardware and the interior work that separates a standard M40i from a properly finished one.

Platform Overview

The G02 X4 rides on BMW's CLAR (Cluster Architecture) — the modular rear-drive platform that underpins the 3 Series G20, 5 Series G30, 7 Series G11, 8 Series G15 and the mechanical twin X3 G01. The M40i spec brings the higher-output B58, adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential at the rear axle, variable-ratio M steering and xDrive with a rear-biased torque split. From launch in 2018 the pre-LCI car made 360 hp / 500 Nm. The 2021 LCI update introduced the B58TÜ1 revision with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a redesigned cylinder head, a new crankcase and a uprated turbo, lifting output to 387 hp / 500 Nm. Do not confuse the M40i with the X4 M Competition F98 — the latter uses the twin-turbo S58 and a heavily reworked chassis.

Body Kits and Styling Programmes

AC Schnitzer ACS4

AC Schnitzer is the longest-standing BMW specialist in Aachen and its ACS4 programme for the G02 X4 is arguably the most cohesive kit on the market. The range includes a front splitter that sharpens the factory M Sport bumper, side skirt extensions that lower the visual centre of gravity, a rear roof spoiler and a rear diffuser with integrated tailpipe trims. AC Schnitzer also supplies a full lowering spring kit (around 25-30 mm front, 20-25 mm rear), a stainless sport exhaust with valve control, a racing silencer for the pre-OPF cars and a signature set of Type VIII forged wheels in 21 and 22 inches. Everything is TUV-certified in Germany, which makes ACS4 parts the default choice for customers who want OEM-plus restraint with paperwork.

Hamann Motorsport Flash

Hamann Motorsport has been reworking BMWs in Laupheim since 1986. Its G02 programme, often badged Flash, is louder than AC Schnitzer and less theatrical than Mansory. Hamann offers a CFRP front lip, aggressive side blades that run the length of the doors, a rear diffuser with four exhaust outlets and a boot spoiler. Hamann also manufactures its own Anniversary Evo and Unique Forged wheels in 22 inches and will colour-match bolt-on fender flares on request. A Hamann-tuned ECU with matching downpipe elevates the M40i to around 450-470 hp. The house style is planted, wide and unmistakably German — a good fit for an X4 owner who wants to be recognised in the paddock without resorting to Dubai-spec widebody theatrics.

3D Design

3D Design from Yokohama, Japan, is the connoisseur's choice for G02 carbon. The catalogue for the M40i includes a dry carbon front splitter, canards, a ducktail boot spoiler, mirror caps, a diffuser insert and interior carbon trim for the dashboard and centre console. Every piece is pre-preg autoclave carbon with a deep weave and a glass-like finish — the same quality standard 3D Design uses on its M3/M4 work. The brand is disproportionately popular among BMW owners in Russia, the CIS and Southeast Asia, because it fits cleanly over factory M Sport bodywork without requiring repaint or structural modification. 3D Design also supplies a sport exhaust with quad valved tailpipes and its own lowering springs.

Manhart Performance MH4 GTR

Manhart Performance of Wuppertal is where G02 owners go when they want serious power. The MH4 GTR package combines Manhart's own ECU calibration, a downpipe with sport cat, a larger-core intercooler, upgraded charge-pipes and Manhart's signature gold-on-black livery stripes. Output on the pre-LCI M40i climbs to 480-510 hp depending on fuel and hardware. Manhart supplies its forged Concave One wheel in 21 and 22 inches, KW coilovers (V3 or Clubsport) as a bolt-on lowering solution and a titanium exhaust. For customers planning track days at the Ring, Manhart will also fit carbon-ceramic brakes sourced from the M3/M4 parts bin.

G-Power

G-Power of Autenzell specialises in high-output B58 work. For the G02 X4 M40i it offers three performance stages topping out around 580 hp / 780 Nm with a bigger turbo, upgraded fuel system, forged internals and a bespoke stainless exhaust. G-Power also supplies its own Hurricane RR forged wheels in 22 inches and a carbon aero package. For customers chasing outright numbers over restraint, G-Power remains the benchmark.

Wheels and Tyres

The G02 M40i leaves the factory on 20 or 21-inch M Double-spoke wheels, typically 245/45 R20 front / 275/40 R20 rear, or 245/40 R21 / 275/35 R21 on the optional larger set. The smart aftermarket sizing for the M40i sits at 21x9.5J ET40 front with 21x10.5J ET45 rear, wrapped in 285/30 R21 front and 315/30 R21 rear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or Pirelli P Zero PZ4. Owners after visual impact step up to 22x9.5 / 22x10.5 with 285/30 R22 / 325/25 R22, accepting the ride-quality compromise.

For forged wheels we recommend AC Schnitzer Type VIII (a wheel designed specifically around the M-Sport brake calliper and central cap logo), HRE FF21 flow-formed, Vossen HF-3 or HF-5, BC Forged HC053 and, at the luxury end, ANRKY AN39 three-piece forged. All of these are sold with correct hub-centric rings and centre caps for BMW 74.1 mm bore; PCD remains 5x112.

Performance Upgrades

The B58 is one of the most overbuilt petrol engines BMW has ever produced. The closed-deck iron-liner block, forged crankshaft and dual-mass flywheel were specified with the reserve in mind. In practice, the M40i responds to tuning with genuinely linear gains and minimal reliability penalty, provided the basics — oil quality, plug intervals and charge-pipe integrity — are respected.

Stage 1 — a flash-tune through OBD from RaceChip Ultimate, Mosselman Turbo Systems (the Dutch B58 specialists), BootMod3 or MHD lifts the pre-LCI car to around 440-460 hp / 620 Nm. On the LCI 387-hp engine the same software reaches 470-490 hp. No hardware is required; 98 RON fuel is recommended.

Stage 2 — a 3-inch stainless downpipe with a 200-cell sport cat, an upgraded intercooler (Wagner Tuning, CSF or Mosselman) and a charge-pipe kit pushes the B58 to 500-520 hp / 680-700 Nm. Transmission software (ZF 8HP TCU remap) is advised at this stage to raise the torque limiter and sharpen shifts.

Stage 3 — G-Power's bigger-turbo package with a port-injection water-methanol option and a full fuel-system upgrade achieves 550-580 hp / 740-780 Nm. Expect a full weekend in the workshop and a meaningful parts invoice.

For exhaust only, Akrapovic Evolution in titanium remains the benchmark for sound quality and weight saving. Remus, Eisenmann Race and Capristo with remote valve control are credible alternatives; Capristo is the loudest. Post-2021 LCI cars carry an OPF (particulate filter) — removing it on EU-registered cars is a registration-losing modification and we advise against it; instead fit a valved cat-back over the OPF for the best of both worlds.

Interior

Factory M Sport seats on the M40i are already excellent, but a merino leather retrim with extended Alcantara headlining, contrast stitching and a CFRP trim swap (the 3D Design dry-carbon set or Manhart's matte-carbon pack) transforms the cabin. A flat-bottom Alcantara M steering wheel with an M-stripe 12 o'clock marker is the single most effective upgrade. Aluminium M Performance pedals and a short-throw shifter complete the brief.

Why Tune Now — Future-Proofing Your X4 M40i in the EV Era

By 2030 most EU markets will have phased out the registration of new internal-combustion cars, and the United Kingdom, Norway and several German cities are already trimming access for older ICE vehicles. Against that backdrop, the G02 X4 M40i occupies an unusually favourable position: the B58 motor is widely regarded as one of BMW's best modern engines — the same unit used in the Toyota GR Supra A90, the Z4 M40i, the M340i/540i and, in tuned form, in Alpina's B3 and B4. Collectors already speak of the B58 the way an earlier generation spoke of the M54 and N54. That makes the M40i a credible future classic, not a disposable mod project.

Treat the car as a five-to-ten-year hold, not a one-season build. Practical implications: keep mileage low and service records complete; prefer OEM or OEM-grade parts over generic replacements; document every modification with invoices and keep the original take-off parts in storage; favour reversible tuning (OBD flash, bolt-on intercooler, cat-back exhaust) over irreversible work (welded downpipes, cut OPFs, permanent body modifications). Choose Akrapovic or Eisenmann over straight-pipe for resale. Invest in paint protection film and a ceramic coating before the first detail. Stockpile a set of original 21-inch M Sport wheels now — they will be harder to source clean in 2030. Tuning in 2026 still means driving a beautifully engineered petrol six-cylinder; tuning it thoughtfully means you will still want it in 2035.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the B58 really as reliable as everyone claims?
A: Yes, within reason. The B58's closed-deck block, forged crank and generous oil capacity make it one of BMW's most durable modern engines — it is the same engine Toyota specified for the Supra A90 after extensive validation. Documented weaknesses are limited: the OEM charge-pipe can fail above Stage 1 (swap for an aluminium unit), the VANOS solenoids are a known wear item at 120,000+ km, and the water pump and thermostat are routine consumables. With 10 k service intervals on quality 0W-30 oil and a charge-pipe upgrade, Stage 1 is essentially risk-neutral.

Q: How does the X4 M40i compare to the X4 M Competition F98?
A: They are different cars. The F98 M Competition uses the twin-turbo S58 (510 hp), adaptive M dampers, an M xDrive system with drift mode, an M-specific rear subframe, carbon-ceramic options and a full M chassis. It is quicker, louder and much more track-oriented — and it costs roughly 40-50 percent more used. The M40i G02 is a brilliant daily driver that tunes cleanly to 500 hp on modest hardware; the F98 is a road-legal track weapon. For most owners the M40i is the smarter buy; for drivers who will actually use the Ring, the F98 is worth the premium.

Q: Is a downpipe legal on the X4 M40i in the EU?
A: A catted downpipe with a high-flow 200-cell sport cat is legal in Germany provided it carries a TUV certificate; AC Schnitzer, Akrapovic and Capristo all offer certified solutions. A decat (no cat) downpipe is not road-legal in any EU member state and voids your MOT/TUV. Post-2021 LCI cars additionally carry an OPF (particulate filter); removing the OPF is a separate and more serious certification issue. Keep the OPF, fit a TUV-certified sport downpipe, and you retain registration.

Q: Can I remove the OPF on a post-LCI X4 M40i?
A: Physically yes, legally no — not in any EU country, nor in the UK. OPF removal is detectable at annual roadworthiness inspection and triggers a failure. Insurance claims can be refused if an undeclared OPF delete is discovered. The correct approach is to leave the OPF in place and fit a valved cat-back exhaust (Akrapovic Evolution, Eisenmann Race, Capristo) that uses active valves to manage sound while respecting emissions. You will not get the louder cold-start of a pre-OPF car, but you will keep the car road-legal and insurable.
